Linda asks…

How big will my puppy get?

I have a morkie (maltese/yorkie). she is about 3 months now and wieghs about 3 pounds. so can u give me the estimate weight of what she will be when grown up- thank u.

weight answers:

Around this time, the method you use to see approx. How big your puppy will be full grown is multiplying the puppies weight by 2 which is 6 and then adding about 10 lbs. You use this method when your puppy is about 4 months old. Your puppy should be around 15lbs at most, but since she is a mix, most likely she will be less because of the small Yorkie in her.

Hope that helps!

Sandra asks…

i want to get a morkie that looks like this….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xh_wi7T3B0 butt…?

when its is full grown does the fur turn grey like a yorkie does??
and how big will it get?

weight answers:

He is a cute little mongrel.

What colour his adult coat will be is hard to say. He will be a small dog. I have never seen a grey yorkie.

Maria asks…

DO you have a Yorkie/maltese mix =morkie?

I have a feamle yorkie mix she is 18 weeks old and is 4.8 lbs. I want to know how big she will get. I had two vets say 51/2l-6 lbs and one say6-10 lbs. Her mom was a 51/2 pound maltese and her dad a 31/2 pound yorkie. I dont know how to find out how big she will be. I looked on a chart not much help. I go out of town a lot and want to bring her with me on the plain and need to know how big she will get. If you have or know someone with this kind of dog could you tell me how big they are thank tou.

weight answers:

Morkie isn’t a real breed, and therefore there is no breed standard. Purebreds, like Yorkies, have an AKC breed standard that is set by the Yorkie Breed Club, and the breeders work to keep all the Yorkie pups the same, so you can always predict how they will turn out physically. Your pup is just a Yorkie/Maltese mix breed, so it could be Yorkie sized, or Maltese sized, or bigger or smaller if there are other breeds in the dogs genetic background. Mixed breeds are not predictable in size, shape, color, or temperament because there is no standard that anyone is working to achieve.

Just wait and see, and enjoy your pup.

Jenny asks…

Pros, cons, & info. about yorkies and malteses or the mix a morkie.?

I already have a 15pound yorkiepoo and a 45 pound wheaten terrier, and i want to get either a yorkie or a maltese or a morkie, but would my dogs i already have hurt or harm a yorkie or a maltese? i don’t want to get a yorkie and have my dogs hurt it… also, can you tell me how big both dogs will grow up to be?

weight answers:

I wouldn’t suggest a “morkie”. There is no accurate way of determining the size when it reaches adulthood unlike with its purebred parents. Yorkies- I have one- are not to be over 7 pounds….that is pretty small. Preferably they are to be 4-6 pounds. Some common health concerns for yorkies are early tooth decay, bronchitis, eye infections, slipped stifle and have delicate stomachs.

Maltese are also a toy breed like the yorkie and are also under 7 pounds and again they are preferred to be 4-6 pounds. They are also prone to sunburn along the hair parting; skin, eye issues, respiratory, and slipped stifle. So they share common health concerns along with the yorkie..meaning its not a really good idea to purposefully bred them..no reputable breeder will breed a mix like this. Backyard breeders will and as such they are generally not very healthy- its not a good idea to crossbreed two breeds with similar health concerns and do no genetic testing like OFA/CERF. I have come across many designer breeds in shelters some from puppy mills and back yard breeders.

Yorkies and poodles also share similar health concerns….and no back yard breeder tests for genetic diseases.

Both Maltese and Yorkies are small breeds- under 7 pounds. A “Morkie” might not even be a yorkie/maltese cross…some breeders breed the mix to another mix, so theres no telling how big a “morkie” might get. Some people predict no bigger then either parent. I’ve had a designer bred mutt before- was adopted at the shelter and he was from a back yard breeder-. He got bigger then both of his parents.

My yorkie playmates are 50+ pound dogs. He does really well with them. My mom’s best friend has a Maltese and Chihuahua with dogs that are 10x their size with no problem. It really depends on your current dog’s behavior. Are they trained? How old are they? I’ve had small dogs with larger dogs with no problems. I never leave them unsupervised because my yorkie does like to play rough with the big dogs. Larger dogs can accidentally harm a smaller dog in play, although I haven’t had that to happen yet.

Before going out to get one of these dogs, research them first. Learn that there is no such thing as a “tea cup”yorkie or Maltese. The “tea cups” are just undersized runts..and usually not very healthy. Backyard breeders and puppy mills use this term..not reputable breeders.

I will also suggest you look in local shelters- you can search petfinder by city/state/ and by breed for one. It will also bring up the breed mixes so its possible you may come across a Maltese/yorkie mix.
There are 846 Maltese listed on petfinder and 1,218 yorkies listed on petfinder.
