Mandy asks…

German Shepherd mixes?

What are some good german shepherd mixed breeds. Tell me more about GSD/Boxer and GSD/Lab……GSD/???mixes

weight answers:

They are mixes. And as such, there is no determining what traits they will inherit from which breed. Even pups from the same litter can vary greatly.

Helen asks…

how do I find out the breed of my pup with out tests?

I was told a german shepherd lab mix but she was supposedly born with no tail, and I herd that australian german shepherds are born like that some times, so how do I find out?

weight answers:

You will never know for sure, even the DNA tests have proven unreliable (look up the YouTube of the registered AmStaff whose DNA test said he was mostly Border Collie). Look at lots of pictures to start with, then look up any breed that seems likely to find less obvious traits.

Also consider the fact that your dog is likely to be a mix of common breeds like German Shepherd and Lab and unlikely to have an exotic or rare breed like a Thai Ridgeback, Basenji, Wirehaired Pointing Griffin, or Otterhound in her lineage because 1) there aren’t many around and 2) what there are generally belong to responsible breeders and competitors who would not let them cross breed and wouldn’t let those offspring end up in a shelter if they did.

The natural bobtail gene exists in several breeds including the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, some Australian Shepherds, a few more rare herding breeds, and it was recently introduced into English Boxers (none have yet been imported to the US as far as I know) – it is a recessive trait, however, and so both parents would need to carry a bobtail gene in order to blame it on genetics. Is is possible that mom or another animal bit it off?

James asks…

I need help with dog food choice?

i have a 3 month old lab german shepherd mix. I put him on wellness large breed puppy and he vomited twice and now wont go near it….my other dog has always been on wellness…so i like the brand. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good quality large breed puppy food?

weight answers:

IMO, Innova makes really good food and it was one my dogs did well on in the past. You could also look at Solid Gold, Canidae, Orijen – any of the foods that have meat as the first ingredient. If your puppy does well on it, that’s the right one for him.

Sandra asks…

Is he thinking of running away?

I recently moved and my 12 year old Lab/German Shepherd mix has gathered all his toys and his leash and put them in a pile near the front door. He normally will keep a few toys by his food dish, but this is the first time he has put everything in one pile and since it is by the front door I am wondering if he is not happy in his new home. Does anyone have an idea why he would do this?

weight answers:

One of my past Dobermanns sat by the front door on & off for a few days when I moved from the south to the midlands because he was a born a “pipe & slippers” dog that liked predictability & routine. Therefore a change in every aspect of his life really upset his applecart – he adjusted no choice really!

Maybe what the dog is trying to show you is that his toys should be binned & replaced, not that he is homeward bound.

David asks…

What kind of dog do you think she is?

we got her from this lady who wasn’t even sure what breed she was
so i’m guessing a lab chow chow mix
or a german shephard chow chow mix
she doesn’t look lab german shepherd mix
these are some pics that i googled
chow chow lab mix http://www.guardianangelpetrescue.com/homele315.jpg
chow chow german shepherd http://cc.usu.edu/~nancyr/gsd/casijosi.jpg
and here is hoe she looks like http://s259.photobucket.com/albums/hh305/missapril93/?action=view&current=sahara010.jpg
she has fur so i’m leaning more towards chow chow mix then lab and german mix and she has floppy ears that’s more like a lab but the pictures got me confused because they all had floppy ears

weight answers:

In my opinion she looks like a Cow Cow mix with German Shepard. I have a German Shepard mix and she looks like Jr when he was a puppy. :) She’s sooooo cute!!!!! :) Hope I helped some. :)
