Thomas asks…
How am I suppose to take care of a 6 week old Labrador retriever puppy?
It’s our first puppy. 7 weeks. Is it normal for him to be biting on alot of stuff? Bite you? Whine at night? What am I suppose to do when it whines? When it bites? Any other tips?

weight answers:
Yes all that is normal.
Puppies are meant to be with their mother until 8 weeks old, but even so.
When he bites, yelp loudly and ignore him for a few minutes, if he hurt his brother or sister this is what would happen, even if he doesn’t hurt you, do this.
He whines because he has suddenly being taken from his family and everything familiar too him. Make sure he has a comfortable spot to sleep. It sounds cruel, but the best thing to do when he cries is ignore him. If you give him attention he will learn that crying gets him cuddles,or some sort of attention.
Sometimes people put a ticking clock under a blanket in the dogs bed, it’s meant to remind them of their mothers heartbeat, I’ve never done this though.
Take him to the vet and get his shots and a general health check.
Enroll him in a puppy training class ASAP. The more socialization, the better.

Donald asks…
How long can a labrador retriever puppy b left at home alone?
He will probably be in a medium sized crate with lots of chew toys and fresh water …. or anyother idea u think will be best xx thnx xx

weight answers:
About an hour or two.
If you will be gone longer, then you’ll need to have someone come in to exercise him and let him out to go potty.
BY the time he’s a year old, 4-5 hours a day would be fine.

William asks…
How much should I feed my Labrador Retriever puppy?
We found two of them them on the street. I would say they are about three months. When should we feed them and how much food at that time?

weight answers:
Read the feeding guidelines on the bag of dog food.. It should give you an idea of how much they should be getting.
At 3 months old, they should be getting about 2-3 meals a day (dependin on what works best for you).. If the bag suggests 1 cup a day, then either feed 1/2 a cup twice a day.. Or 1/3 a cup 3 times a day.

Sandy asks…
Fastest and easist way to train my 8 week labrador retriever puppy?
Right now she’s inside and I am using the doggie pads.
How can I succeed at getting her off the doggie pads and having her eliminate outside? I’ve had her a week.
Thanks!

weight answers:
A) she’s 8 weeks old
B) You’ve only had her a week
C) You’re using pads.
These things take time. This training is not done over night or in a week. Her bladder has to develop as well.
Try to get her off of the doggie pads as soon as possible, these basically are telling her it’s ok to go potty in the house.
I highly reccomend crate training. I have never used the pads or newspapers and never will. All of my pups are housebroken using crate training.
This site has some great advice on Crate Training and Housbreaking. It is a lot of info and I think you just might find it useful.

Maria asks…
How long can I leave a labrador retriever puppy alone?
i’m going to get a puppy in june or july but my dad’s at work until 5 and my mum is revising at uni or she’s sometimes at home ands were at school. my sister is at home everyday, but on somedays she’s at classes and courses fror a few hours(4 or maybe 5 hours). So is it okay and what can i give him to entertain while were gone?
by a few hours a meant 1 or 2 hours

weight answers:
Anything longer than 1 hour, for a puppy, and particularly for a Lab puppy, who has the potential for being hugely destructive if left alone, and bored, is simply not on. Puppies need to be taken out every hour, after every nap, every feed (and who is going to feed this puppy lunch?), after short periods of playtime. Otherwise, it’s going to take forever to house-train him, and you and your family will be coming home to a huge mess. A few hours is not 4 or maybe 5 hours! And this is just the housetraining issue. Puppies need to be socialised. Would you/your family leave a human baby alone for hours?
Adult dogs should not be left alone on a regular basis for more than 4 hours at a time, never mind a puppy.
This sounds like a totally unwise decision. Wait until somebody in your family is going to be around far more than you say here, if you are going to get a puppy. You might be just about okay if you get a dog who has gone through the baby puppy stages, say at around 2 years. But not a puppy.
Add – I have no idea where Mica above, is coming from with her feeding schedule. Puppies of 8/9 weeks need breakfast (7.30 – ish), lunch (mid-day -ish), tea (around 4.30 – 5pm) and probably, depending on how well he’s doing in terms of weight etc. A small meal around 9 pm.
