Sandra asks…
Surgery for an 11 year old dog. Risks?
I have an 11 year old staffy X lab. He’s in pretty good health, he has arthritis and slightly failing eyesight, but health wise he is good, very slightly overweight due to exercise restrictions lately. He needs to have surgery for a torn cruciate ligament and I’m just wondering if his age poses any extra risks with the anesthetic or recovery?

weight answers:
Blood work-BEFORE- will show liver problems.
Surgery is NOT necessary in most cases.

Richard asks…
Nervous dog?
My gorgeous staffy x lab is so nervous, She is 2 and a half we have had her since she was a pup so I know she has not been mis treated, She is scared of busy areas and anyone she does not know. It is getting embarrasing when we take her out and someone wants to fuss her she cowers, people have even asked if we are mistreating her. We love her to bits if anything she is spoilt to be honest. She is playful and happy at home. how can we give Missy dog some confidence?

weight answers:
Sounds as though you may have inadvertently taught her to be scared. What I mean is, don’t forget that if you cuddle and pet your dog when she is scared (which is our natural response as humans, so don’t feel too bad!) you are actually “rewarding” that behaviour– so you will have taught her to display that cowering behaviour in that particular situation. This is why many dogs are frightened of thunderstorms– the first clap of thunder a dog ever hears CAN be frightening, but if you don’t act fazed then the dog will learn there is nothing to be afraid of.
At this stage, I would suggest taking her to dog runs to interact with other people and dogs. Reward her and praise her a LOT. She will look to you for how to react in a new situation, so make sure you are always calm around her.

Nancy asks…
surely 16 wks is too young for puppy to be on heat?
i have a female 16 wk old staffy X mastiff (bonnie) and a male 10 yr old staffy X lab (bucket), the past few days bucket (who hasnt been fixed) has been following bonnie around, sniffing her, panting, whining and humping her head all the while she looks at him strangely, i plan on getting her fixed before her first heat but surely shes too young for it now and the five vets in my area wont touch her till shes 6 months. i was wondering if its maybe a female on heat in the neighbourhood and poor bucket is confused in his old age, i’ve had him since he was 2 yrs and hes never had a chance to mate with a female
has anyone got any ideas as to whats going on?
thanks in advance

weight answers:
It may or may not be too young. I wouldn’t chance it. Keep them separated.

Linda asks…
My dog has a tumour in his ear , any advice please?
To briefly explain my dogs history…he is 3 years old (staffy x lab) and since 1 year has had Various problems due to a food allergy. Mainly these have been episodes of skin itching around his face, ears and feet resulting in infections and 2 hematomas in his left ear. He has had tests and been treated promptly for each incident. He is on a restricted diet and doing well mostly. When he got a 3rd hematoma in his ear last week I was expecting the same operation (to put a drain in his ear and anti biotics as before.)
I was told they had found a tumour in his ear when I went to pick him up from the vets and that he may need a Total Ear Canal ablation(removal of the whole inner ear) . I will get the results of a biopsy done today or tomorrow to see if it is cancerous. I am very concerned about such major surgery and wonder if anyone has experience of this operation. Obviously I am going to talk through all this with our vet today btw.
We have insurance so cost is not an issue.

weight answers:
I have a dog that has had partial ear ablations on both ears due to a congenital defect. This can be a very painful surgery so make sure that your vet has a good pain management regimen. It takes around two weeks to be healed and for the sutures to be removed. My dog did very well after her two separate surgeries. Hopefully the biopsy shows a benign tumor. Good luck with your dog.

Mary asks…
Can my puppy get ill from lying in the sun for too long?
i have a 12week old puppy hes black and apparently black puppies cannot stay in the sun too long as it can make them ill?, but he enjoys lying outside in the sun i will bring him in for a while and then he will wine until i take him out again, also he wines alot in general hes a happy pup gets lots of love and attention but he will sit there sometimes and wine i will talk to him and sometimes he will stop but he soon starts again, hes a staffy x lab and someone told me that staffys can be very vocal so they wine and sometimes it means there just talking to you but im unsure

weight answers:
Well they can certainly get sick and dehydrate and get sunburn on their nose. I would think for your breed, I would watch it if it got over 85 degrees, I wouldn’t let him out too long. I would think he is a very vocal breed and you also have to watch, the more he runs and walks and plays, the more energy he will get, but not too much walking when he is first little. Too much exercise is bad for the legs and joints. One of my shelties makes groaning sounds that makes it sound like she is talking. It is very funny. Have fun with your puppy.
