David asks…
What kind of bug is this?
I saw a bug last night that was pretty scary and I have no idea what it is. It’s thorax looked like a wasp’s, yellow with black stripes and even pointy at the end, but it’s head looked like a red ant‘s head. But this bug was bigger than an ant and a wasp, it’s head alone was around the size of a penny. I know this isn’t very specific but any help would be great
If it helps, this bug was in Utah
I looked at the links provided and it wasn’t either of those. It’s thorax did look like a wasps though, same shape and yellow with black stripes. The insect didn’t have any wings, it had 6 legs, and yes it’s body was proportionate with it’s head, which was around the size of a penny and red. It was crawling around on the sidewalk and when I was looking at it, it just sort of crawled away into the grass.
I figured it out. It’s either a termite queen or a Jerusalem cricket.

A little more information would help (quite a few insects mimic wasps so that birds and other predators will hopefully leave them alone). Did this thingy have wings, and was it flying? What was it doing when you saw it – crawling on the ground, visiting flowers, eating fruit, what? That’s a very big head for an insect; was the rest of it proportionally large?
I have links below to a couple of possibilities:

Jenny asks…
What kind of bug was this?!?
i got up and saw a huge black bug on the floor. but i’ve never seen a bug like that before! It literally looks like a HUGE overgrown black ant. Does anyone have any idea what bug this might be?

weight answers:
It is probably a carpenter ant! They are black and usually the size of a medium beetle. These ants are not good for your foundation, so you should probably spray around your house.

Robert asks…
What kind of bugs are these?
I’ve only noticed these because my cat spotted them out by swatting at them while they are crawling on my base boards/lower walls, I HATE BUGS! especially in my apartment and i want them gone ASAP! i have no picture to show, but let me try my best to explain them…they are small like ants (not those very small ones – like the black ones i guess? it’s hard to explain). They have the body like a pill bug EXCEPT there is no lines in it like the pill bug has it’s just a black bug the size of an ant, that looks like a pill bug – one thing it has is a yellow (i mean yellow like the yellow on a bumble bee, no it’s not a bumble bee fyi) stripe going across in the middle of it’s back. So far i’ve found them in my bedroom, it’s only been 4 or 3 that i’ve found so far…i found two last night, thanks to my kitty. They aren’t gross looking but i just hate bugs. Thankyou if you could help me identify these bugs. Please post pictures of your answer so i can search them, to see if it’s the bug. Thank you all!
Oh and, i have NO carpet in my apartment it’s all hardwood flooring even in my bedroom…hardwood everywhere in my place (besides kitchen, bathroom thats tiles.) and they haven;t been seen there, it’s only my bedroom.
Nope thats not it, it’s not any type of ant thats for sure.
I would like to spray, but i have a very nosey/curious kitty and sprays like RAID could be harmful for her.
I googled larder beetle, and it’s not it! the yellow line is not as wide. I’ll have to take a picture of those things when i find another one and post another Q. Thank you for your advice though! ours windows are old in the bedroom (and we are very high up – the whole apartment is) so where ever the things are coming from is more than likely the windows (2of them). My kitty ALWAYS sits in the window so it’ll be fine when it drys? wont be harmful to her? even if it’sdry and she gets it on her paws, then washes herself?

weight answers:
Google “larder beetle”
allowing the Raid to dry before kitty is allowed in the window should be fine, though all the raid will do is kill the insects as they come from their source…try to figure what they are then attack the source if possible to stop them.

Helen asks…
What kind of ant is this?
It looks like a regular black ant, but it is about 1/2 an inch long. Im in Tennessee, I just moved here from florida and it is an entirely different ecosystem than I’m used to. There is an oak tree in the front yard. I only see about 3 or 4 every so often, but this time it was on my bed. i dont care what kind of bug it is, i’m scared of bugs. What kind do you think it is?

weight answers:
It is probably a carpenter ant. They were in FL too, you just didn’t see one. The one in the house probably just hopped a ride on someone’s shoe.
